    History of the Soulful Strut

My continued exercise goals have carried over year after year. Actually I began to get more serious about my health after having a minor stroke at age 49 which caused me to lose some of the vision in my left eye. For about 3 years I was dating a guy who did not believe in the bus or subway so we walked 30 city blocks from our workplace to his neighborhood. Believe me the city blocks in Manhattan (NYC) are longggg!! Needless to say he was in excellent shape but eventually he retired and returned to his country. Last year I turned 55 and came into a little money so I figured I’m gonna join a gym and hire a personal trainer. My trainer who must be around 40 and looks like those weight lifting guys said he could return my body to when I was 35. For a while things were rough and those exercises were tough but I hung in there until I popped my right knee. I was out of work for 2 weeks and had to have physical therapy for several months. Lucky for me I did not need surgery. My physical therapist told me to stay away from weight machines, StairMasters and the like. He explained that women in menopause like me have weaker joints and I also have arthritis. Last winter provided me with ample opportunities to shovel snow since we had snowstorms on a weekly basis. Finally Spring 2015, warm weather, no more snow or ice!! Hooray!! I can’t stand to stay inside the house on my days off so I instituted the Soulful Strut. It is a combination of fitness and photography. I walk all over and around my Brooklyn neighborhood each time trying to take a different route and photograph street scenes. I get in my walking exercise and enjoy a wonderful hobby at the same time. I have high blood pressure and am borderline diabetic but I do believe the walking exercise is helping my hypertension and is keeping me from getting Type Two Diabetes which runs on my mother’s side of the family. In Feb. I will turn 57, feeling fit and fine plus still getting looks from guys!! LOL!!
